Effective communication is 20% what you know and 80% how you feel about what you know.

Grammar time

As or Like

Like is used before a noun, e.g. 'He was like a bull in a china shop'. As or as if are used before a clause, e.g. 'She's spending as if there was no tomorrow' (not 'like there is no tomorrow'), or 'He doesn't see it as I do' (not 'like I do').

Windows Vista

I recently bought a new computer with Windows Vista, so I thought I'd share some of my experiences with you in case you're considering Vista; or maybe you already have it and are experiencing teething problems.

The first thing you need to be aware of is that moving to a new operating system is going to take more time than you expect and cost more than the price of the system itself:

¨ Time; because it will take plenty of that to adjust to the new system and personalise it to your requirements

¨ Money; because you will need to upgrade half your software programs.

The main problem you'll find is that half your programs aren't compatible with Vista, so they will need upgrading.

In the case of my digital camera and all-in-one printer, the manufacturers will not be upgrading the software at all. I can still print and fax on my all-in-one, but some of the advanced features, such as OCR scanning, don't work on Vista.

MYOB told me I'd have to upgrade from their BusinessBasics program to the more expensive MYOB Accounting, because the Vista-friendly version of BusinessBasics can't read files from the XP version.

Other programs that aren't compatible with Vista include Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0 (or older), and even the latest version of Adobe Photoshop does not officially support Vista.

So before leaping in, consider all aspects and options. And if you've set your heart on a new computer that doesn't come with the XP option, you can always remove Vista and install XP; but I'd recommend you get your IT expert to do this as it will need to be adjusted specifically for your new computer.
